Light-year. The distance traveled by light in a single year; the time it takes for design to evolve to a next step.
What can be said about larger but lighter, lighter but stronger? Of course it can be done. We’ve done it over and over again, but does there come a time when the bar can’t be raised?
No, there are always improvements to be made, new ways of thinking, new materials, and processes to exploit. As we’ve said – the performance benchmark for a fly reel is retrieve rate per ounce. If you haven’t thought about it before, think about it now: there’s no downside to high retrieve rate other than extra weight.
As an example, consider the 2021 Gen 6 Litespeed: CNC machined with material distributed artfully along critical load paths, stable and strong, so light you might forget it’s there, but beautiful enough to make you remember it is.
The art of the fly reel derives from the science of the fly reel, but at the end of the day both art and science, when held in balance, serve to make us smile.

LSM – The marine version of Litespeed is equipped with a hybrid drag system, sharing some elements of the Cobalt drag – fixed spindle, large heat-wicking conical surfaces, click stop drag knob. The LSM incorporates close tolerance composite bearings, and comes equipped with the same linear spring set found on LSF, optimized for each reel size. Like our Cobalt reel, it holds an IPX8 waterproof rating to 100 ft. LSM frame and spool share the same open structure as LSF, with emphasis on greater stiffness and stability.

Available in Riviera and Ultramarine.

M10

I fish my m10 only in the surf never from a boat I have dropped it in sand every time I went out. I just dunk and it keeps working. It’s really a lite weight reel. The drag is more than you’ll ever need I bet. So far really happy..time will tell..it get abused

This is a great reel for larger bonefish. The weight balances well with modern light weight rods and the wagon wheel pickup is much appreciated when they turn and run at you. Really pleased with this reel.

The line pick up and weight make that reel such a useful tool out in the wild. Thanks for letting us know its working for you!

A little bit of a letdown

I will say I own 5 Lamson reels. Including 3 generations of ULA/Force series, I really don't fish anything else for trout, so when it was time for a new high-end saltwater reel, this was a no-brainer. Unfortunately, I am a bit disappointed. I have other salt reels in this price range, and this one does not exhibit the quality I expected. The spool has multiple machining marks and blemishes in the anno. The drag also has this terrible mushy feel, like it's half a detent drag and half a non-detent drag. There are no defined stops like other high-end reels. It's just clicking but not stopping in any specific place, which feels decidedly not like a $750 reel. I'm trying to decide if it needs to go back, but I have a trip in a couple of weeks, so we will see how it handles fish. It is, of course, very light and makes a 9wt. rig with the 10wt. reel lighter than most 6wt. setups with traditional salt reels.

Thanks for letting us know. We reached out via email to get some more info and work towards a solution.

What more could you ask for

I have this reel in size 10. Such a beauty of a reel. Smooth wind and drag. I’m about to place an order with my local shop for a size 8 and a size 12. I’ll be relying on these reels for a Cuba fishing trip next year. I have no doubt these will be up to the task and for many other expeditions afterwards.
Just like the freshwater reels, the Waterworks Lamson quality outlasts and out performs the rest.

Thanks Jarrod, you will have the whole fleet! have a blast on your trip and we appreciate you bringing our reels along.

Never buy another reel

I own 3 Waterworks. Oldest is 15 years, a 3.4 force. I'm very hard on my equipment. Fished mainly Salt, been emersed in Salt more times than I can count. Caught countless fish without fail. Other than a fresh water rinse, none have never had a thorough cleaning and still work like new. Try that with any other brand ?
Only thing I've had to replace is the plastic clicker on the 3.4.
This 12 wt Litespeed is lighter and bigger than my first 2 reels. Haven't had a chance to test it on monster Tarpon yet but know already that I'm prepared for battle with serious equipment. Let you know in November when I return from Costa Rica.

Thanks for the endorsement! Sounds like you've put those reels through the ringer. Enjoy your trip in the fall. That LSM will be ready to do battle.
